The one quirk: it's landscape

Unlike most ID photos worldwide, Japan's visa photo is wider than it is tall (45 × 35 mm, not 35 × 45). Photos submitted in the vertical format are a frequent reason for re-submission. The tool pre-selects the correct landscape crop.
